Obituary: Frank W. Blockston, Sr., 87, formerly of S. George Street, Rome, New York, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 in Rome Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 4, 1920 in Riverside, New Jersey the son of James and Viola Winkelspecht Blockston.
Frank was educated in Buffalo.
On February 16, 1946, he married Helen Gromelski in Transfiguration Church. She died December 19, 2005.
Mr. Blockston was employed at Rome Strip Steel for twenty-five years retiring in 1982 and previously worked as an iron worker.
Frank was a veteran of the United States Army-Air Corp during World War II in the Mediterranean Theatre as an aircraft mechanic where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
He was a member of the Transfiguration Church and was a Life Member of The Rome Polish Home.
Frank was an avid hunter and an excellent musician. He played the guitar and temporarily sat in with a big band orchestra during World War II while serving in Casablanca.
Surviving are one daughter, Alexis Loomis and special friend, Marty Suleski, Steuben; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Blockston and special friend, Elaine Medick, and Frank and Cathy Blockston, Jr., all of Rome; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Lisa, Tina, Jessica, David, Frank III, Kelly, Melissa, Marie; and nine great-grandchildren, J.C., Connor, Erin, Eriana, Jason, Ayden, Jennifer, Fred and Ed. He was predeceased by one brother, James Blockston.
Frank's family wishes to express a special thank you to Helen Czarnecki for her wonderful care and compassion shown to Frank during his illness.
Funeral will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome Saturday, June 21, 2008, at 9:00A.M. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home 4:00 to 7:00P.M. Friday.
