Obituary: Carl (Spyder) Heim, Jr., entered into eternal rest on June 20, 2006. He was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, on April 14, 1953 to Bridget and Carl Heim. Carl was educated in various schools throughout the country while his father served in the United States Navy. Carl graduated from Huntingburg High School, Huntingburg, IN. In 1970 Carl joined the United States Navy. He attended Basic Academy in Great Lakes, IL. While in Basic Academy, he volunteered for the UDT/Navy Seal Recruit program and was attached with Company 11. In July 1970 he was transferred to Little Creek, VA, where he completed his UDT/R Seal Training. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1971.
While on leave from the military he met Helen Ann Fatiuk, they fell in love and were married on August 18, 1973, in the First United Methodist Church, in Rome. Carl and Helen lived in Philadelphia, PA, while Carl was stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Port. In 1975 Carl and Helen settled in Rome.
Carl was first employed at the former Rome Iron Mills on Canal Street. He attended local colleges and continued in the steel industry as a Civil Engineer. He was last employed as the Chief Engineer with Tony's Ornamental Iron Works. Carl was a member of the Disabled American Veteran's and the 82nd Air borne Division.
The family left behind will carry the loving memory of Carl in our hearts forever; his mother, Bridget Heim; brothers and sisters, Frank and Diona Heim, Barbara Heim, Joyce and Tim VanWinkle, Cathy Welp, and Joan Schultz, all of Indiana; father-in-law, and mother-in-law, Michael and Esther Fatiuk, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Karen Fatiuk, all of Rome; several nieces and nephews; and lastly, his wife Helen Ann Fatiuk, who will cherish thirty-three years of marriage and all the wonderful memories. His father, Carl Heim, predeceased his son twenty-six years ago and today they are together again.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., at 9:30am and the First Assembly of God Church in Marcy at 10:30am. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
