Obituary:Joseph S. Yano, 91, Rome., died August 27, 2005 in Rome Memorial Hospital. He was born December 10, 1913 in Rome, a son of John and Josephine Scalzo Yano. Joe was educated in Rome schools. On July 30, 1966, he married Sarah Carpenter Flihan in Rome. She died February 7, 2005.
Mr. Yano worked at GAFB for twenty-six years, retiring in 1975. He served in the U. S. Army during WW II. Joe was a member of St. Peter's Church, the Henry P. Smith Post American Legion, D.A.V., Rome Independent Hose Company, and was an Honorary Lifetime Member and Past Exalted Ruler (1973-1974) of the Rome Elks Club.
Joe enjoyed 38 years of marriage with Sarah. He took several trips with her including fishing trips to Canada and Cape Cod, cruises and going out West. Joe hosted many gatherings at his lakefront home in Sylvan Beach, where everyone enjoyed his wonderful cocktails. The last few years, Joe enjoyed spending time with his dog Duke while watching his programs on TV, especially the Price Is Right.
Surviving are one sister, Rosemary Vaughn, Lee Center, one brother, Leonard, Rome, two sisters-in-law, Rose Yano and Lena Yano, Rome, several nieces and nephews; three special god-children, Bryan Carmody, Deirdre Carmody and Alanna Carmody; a great neighbor, Chuck, a special caretaker, Sheila; and his faithful companion, Duke. He was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, Paul, and Samuel.
Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. and St. Peter's Church at 1:30 p.m. Interment St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Contributions in Joe's memory may be made to the Rome Humane Society or St. Peter's Church Memorial Fund.
