Name: Stephen "Steve" Olnas Date of Death: Thursday, June 25, 2009 Residence: Lee, NY Age: 92 Obituary: Stephen (Steve) Olnas, 92, of Town of Lee, New York, passed away, Thursday, June 25, 2009, in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, after a long illness. He was born June 19, 1917, in Navesink, New Jersey, the son of Stephen and Josephine Urniasz. Steve was a graduate of Red Bank, New Jersey High School. In 1937, he married Frieda Stoye in Red Bank, New Jersey. She died in 1974. He later married Olga Stecknowitz on December 30, 1982 in Rome. Mr. Olnas transferred with Watson Labs, Eatontown, New Jersey to Griffiss Air Force Base in 1951, retiring in June of 1972 with 31 years of federal service as a Maintenance Shop Forman. He later was employed at Vernon Downs as a Mutual Clerk from 1972- 1983. Steve proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He was a member of St. Paul's Church and served as an usher. Steve was a lifetime member of the Rome Knights of Columbus, Council 391 and its 4th Degree Assembly, a life member of the National Association of Federal Employee, and in addition, he was a member of the Henry P. Smith Post of the American Legion, the Ava Dorfman Senior Center, and a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile. Steve was an avid golfer and bowler, he served as President of the Senior Retired Men's Golf League in 1985 and was a member of the Knight of Columbus Bowling League. Surviving beside his wife, Olga, are two daughters and s son-in-law, Carol Marucci, St. Louis, M0. Jackie and Pat Cogsgrove, Leesburg, VA.; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Cathy Olnas, Lake Bluff, IL.; one step-daughter and her husband, Barbara and Joseph Fontana, Rome; eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Judy Reader Feduccia and two sisters, Josephine Duryea and Helen Hogan. Steve's family wished to express their gratitude to Drs. Eldredge, Tisch, Mian and the staff at the Mohawk Glen Hemo-Dialysis Unit and the 6th floor Nursing Staff at Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital for the kindness and compassion shown to him during his illness. Services: Funeral services will be held Monday 9:15A.M. at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George Street, Rome and 10:00A.M. at St. Paul's Church. Interment St. Peter's Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home 4:00P.M. to 8:00P.M. Sunday. Contributions may be made in Steve's memory to St. Paul's Church Memorial Fund or Jervis Library.
