Obituary:Rose Horodnicki Mondrick, 83, formerly of 9244 Harris Road, Lee Center, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Rome Nursing Home after a long struggle with declining health.
She was born July 4, 1923, the daughter of Jacob and Frances Swatko Horodnicki, Verona, NY. She was educated in Rome Schools. Rose was united in marriage to Alex Mondrick on March 2, 1944 in West Branch when Alex was on a three-day leave from the United States Navy.
Rose worked at Milvo's Restaurant and at a Rome cable mill as a wire tester, while Alex completed his World War II tour of duty aboard the Destroyer, USS Charles S. Sperry. When Alex returned they purchased a dairy farm in Lee Center, which they operated together until their retirement in 1986. Most of their adult lives were focused on raising their seven children, grand children, and great-grand children and enhancing their dairy farm. They enjoyed country living, the farming community, and the wealth of friends and neighbors who visited often. Rose enjoyed cooking, baking, and entertaining family and friends at home. She was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, Rome where she served as president of the Sisterhood for several years. Rose was also an active member of Lee American Legion Post 1794 and served as Chaplain of the Women's Auxiliary for several years. After retirement, she also became a member of the Lee Center Senior Citizens Group.
Rose is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rose Marie and L. James Jones Jr. Lee Center; and five sons and four daughters-in-law, John and Lynn Mondrick, Durhamville; Kenneth Mondrick and his special friend Dottie Rundel, Rome; Robert and Mary Claire Mondrick, Taberg; James and Tammy Mondrick, Lee Center; and Martin and Shirley Mondrick, Croghan; grand children, great grand children, sisters-in-law Mary Chudyk and Julie Mondrick, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Alex, daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Steven Van Hoeven; her parents, her brother John Horodnicki, her father and mother in-law, Nicholas and Julia Mondrick; several brothers and sisters-in-law and a niece and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Saturday at 9am, followed by interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Lee Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7pm.
Contributions may be made in Rose's memory to Lee American Legion Post 1794 Scholarship Fund or the charity of your choice.
